Mote Park (Away)
Wednesday 25th September 2024
We started our day in grey skies & and a sombre mood. The news of the sudden passing of our stalwart, much loved player Ian Hawkins was being conveyed as we gathered.
We all knew “ Ian of the pink woods” who led so well and brought us all together, new players and seasoned “pros”. Many of us enjoyed Ian’s Thursday sessions, where newbies had a genuine welcome and were seamlessly slotted in to play with the regulars.

Only last Thursday Ian was with us as usual. We did you proud today Ian.
This was an excellent friendly..and we won too ! Well done.
We fielded a full team on our last match of the “summer” season. Captain of the day David Jarrett led us to victory. Although the score was not glorious on every rink everyone gave it their all. Mote Park players all gave us a warm welcome thanking us for making the journey. At tea Egerton Park had their noses ahead 42:38 & 3 rinks apiece. The final score was 95:84.
Well done to our top rink of John Gilbert, Doris Wickenden & Tim Jeffery with a splendid 24:4.Special thanks to our drivers today. The way home in the dark with heavy rain was strewn with roadworks & road closures.

Adur (Away)
Wednesday 10th September 2024
Our Captain of the day Paul Hales had a stressful start to the match. Two of our Egerton team had not turned up to play so…

he had to pay their match fees on behalf of our club. Then came the search for any of our players who had arrived with all 4 woods & a potential shuffle of our teams.
It was too late to call in our sub so a keen bowler missed out on playing today.
PLEASE when you sign up to play make sure that you have the date in your diary & also check to see if you have been selected. If you cannot see the match on the board please ask in the office.
The day was saved by Adur Captain Roger Provost. He found us 2 of their players. One of these played with less than 10 minutes notice. His inclusion was especially generous as he is one of Adur’s best “skips” & now he was now playing lead for Egerton. An Adur player was heard to say in jest “if he is on my rink I am going home if you don’t give us a 26 shot handicap start” !
Adur are well known for their warm welcome. There is an opportunity to shop for greetings cards & jigsaw puzzles as well as superb catering. Their crispy chicken sandwiches & vast “boats” of chips are so tempting but did they have an impact on our final score?
The game was one of our closest of the season mirroring our previous game against Adur this summer. We had a narrow victory at home in July.
At tea, after 9 ends, the overall score was 34 to Egerton & 52 to Adur. The score in rinks was 3 apiece. We found the green a little slow. Captain Paul joked that they needed the lawnmower to trim the grass on his rink! Congratulations to our top rink of John the Adur “star”, Doris Wickenden & John Elliot our top rink with a final score of 27:11. The final overall score was a narrow loss 88:97. Captain Roger seemed to have removed all the numbers of male players from the raffle. Egerton ladies were especially fortunate today.
Many of our team continued to enjoy a splendid outing by dropping in at the “Barley Mow” for supper & a few drinks on the way home. There were stories a plenty & not all were about bowling. Chairman Denis explained the hazard of having a pet snake eagle & then using a hose pipe to water the garden..
